What is self-care?

Eileen:

Self-care to me is about taking time to listen to your body and mind, taking time to care for yourself just like how you would to your loved ones. I feel that a lot of times we tend to neglect ourselves in the process of caring and loving others. Little did we know that we ought to take care of ourselves, to become stronger before reaching out to help. Self-care isn’t selfish, it isn’t just for women and it definitely isn’t about spending money.

Sabrina:

Actually, there are so many types of self care. To me, self care is anything and everything that brings you positivity and lifts up your mood. In a way, it ensures that you stay grounded and well, ‘zen’. It's actually close to self love because you're putting yourself first such as your mental, emotional and physical health abv everything else.

In more technical terms, self-care consists of 4 key categories - emotional, physical, psychological and spiritual health. Of course, today I’m not going to bore you about what these actually mean!

So today, we want to share with you some tips on how you can kickstart your self-care

1. Always take time to reflect

Personally, I feel that this is the easiest way to start. Spend some time to find out more about yourself, what is affecting your current mood. If you’re not feeling good about yourself, feeling down etc, what is it that is making you feel so? Is there a way you can work around it? How can you overcome this feeling?

2. Have some me time

With hectic school work and all the other things happening around you and the world, it would be great if you can spend some time alone. Relax, do a facial mask, watch your favorite movie or read your favorite book~ Basically things that you love should be implemented into your daily life even if it’s for 10 mins only as it would make a HUGE difference to your mood.

3. De-stress

I’m sure all of us are stressed in some ways, be it school, work or life in general. It is really important to remind yourself to de-stress. For instance, I choose to create to-do lists to plan and find out my priorities. Ensure to slot in a 15-30 mins break to relax. Kinda like a reward for yourself.

4. Give yourself more credit

Bringing yourself down because you feel like you’ve not done good enough? That’s the worst thing to do to yourself. Of course, we all have a certain set of expectations for ourselves, but what really matters is the journey and what you have learnt from it. The fact that you have already taken the first step to do something, you deserve to give yourself a pat on t back.

5. Start a gratitude journal

Choose a journal, be it a physical notebook or even an app on your phone. No need to be fancy, just you and the paper. Ask yourself what are some things you’re grateful for without comparing yourself with anyone else.

6. Take yourself out on a date

Go out for a walk, window shopping, treat yourself! Be kind to yourself ! No hesitations, no buts. You deserve it ❤️ take it as a way of saying to yourself “I’m proud of u now let’s take a lil breakie”.

7. Forgive yourself

Realize that the past is in the past, what’s done is done, there’s nothing you can do about it. But you choose to learn and grow from it. Don’t beat yourself up over what has happened. Remember everything has made you into this strong and resilient individual. Focus on the current and you can do this!

8. Make your body happy

Eat well, exercise well and simply take care of yourself <3 when your body is happy, you will subconsciously realize that you will be feeling happier too! It’s seriously like a new found drive to just keep going and going. You’ll feel pumped to continue wit your day.

9. Learn to say no

A lot of times, we are afraid to say no because we fear the reactions of the other party. We fear the judgements, unhappiness and criticisms from people. But in the process of putting in so much effort in worrying, we fail to forget to take care of ourselves. Say no to others but say yes to yourself <3 nope it is not being selfish!

10. Be organized

Simply making your bed is self care. Being organized will most definitely reduce stress as there’s less mess which will also curve anxiety. An organized surrounding = an organized mindset. Before starting a task try to ensure your area is decluttered.

That’s all for now, go get started with your self-care journey~ Remember that we’re on this road together ❤️ . Be proud of yourself, reward yourself and always remember, LOVE YOURSELF. Also, stay tuned for more self-care related content in this month of November.

~ Sending you unlimited positivity ✨
